The city was settled in 1861 as a cotton mission and is the seventh-largest city in Utah. The nearby Snow Canyon State Park offers trails, dunes, and red sandstone cliffs. St. George's downtown is dotted with amazing 19th-century architecture. The most populous city in the state outside of the Wasatch Front, St. George is located near several national parks and monuments, including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Grand Canyon National Park. The city is also home to several colleges and universities, including Dixie State University and Brigham Young University — Zion Campus. With its proximity to outdoor recreation and stunning desert scenery, St. George is a popular destination for tourists and retirees.
