Welcome to Salt Lake City
Vibrant and exciting precinct of Utah metropolis
Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous city of Utah as well as the seat of Salt Lake County. It is the core of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, with a large population. The town was founded in 1847 by early pioneer settlers. Salt Lake City's street grid system is based on a standard compass grid plan, with the southeast corner of Temple Square serving as the origin of the Salt Lake meridian. The city was originally named Great Salt Lake City, but in 1868, the word "Great" was dropped from the city's name. Due to its location in the Intermountain West, Salt Lake City developed a strong tourist industry, and population growth shifted to suburban areas north and south of the city. Today, Salt Lake City is a hub of commerce for the Intermountain West, and its architecture reflects this history. The city is home to several pre-war structures, as well as many new buildings that have been erected in recent years.
