Welcome to Provo
Utah's metropolis south of Salt Lake City on Interstate 15
Provo is a city in Utah Valley and is the county seat of Utah County. It is located south of Salt Lake City on the Wasatch Front. The city was named in honor of an explorer from Quebec, named Etienne Provost. The area around Provo was the traditional home of the Ute Indians. To the west of Provo lies Utah Lake, and to the east of the city stands a towering range of mountains called the Wasatch Front.
Provo is the largest city between Salt Lake City and Grand Junction, Colorado. It is home to Brigham Young University (BYU), one of the largest private higher education institutions in the United States. The city is also home to the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum. Provo was founded in 1849 by John T. Gibson and other Mormon settlers as Fort Utah. The city was renamed Provo in 1850 for Étienne Provost, an early French-Canadian trapper. Living in Provo offers opportunities to enjoy the outdoors with access to hiking, biking trails, skiing, and fly fishing. The city also has a lively arts scene with several theaters and art galleries.
